A 10 year old lives in an orphanage that provides care for kids who have no one else. The tensions are high between the kids, teachers, and other staff members. With nowhere to hide, they come together to find their strength in order to keep the peace.There are many other movies about orphans available but this is one of the few Hindi language films on the subject. As well as being a powerful drama, it explores some issues including caste discrimination and family life among children at risk of being left without anyone to care for them. On the whole the cast do a good job of bringing this movie to life. The kids come across as believable and believable characters. This is an interesting film about not giving up on children who are left without any family.Lets start off with the intro of the story, theme, and plot of 'The Orphanage'. The story is about 10 year old Simon Bolivar (Alex Robbins) who grows up in an orphanage in Spain with his 38 year old caretaker Sandra (Irene Jacob), who is also Simon's foster mother, who was abandoned by her husband at birth. The orphanage is based at the bottom of a mountain where it's hard to find anyone to visit Simon. The orphanage is also home to an 8 year old blind girl named Esther (Eva Leonardi), who has been living at the orphanage for 3 years, and an 18 year old teenager named Daniel (Tony O'Callaghan) who has been there for almost 2 years. Sandra loves Simon very much but she already feels like he is too much of a mother to him. Sandra wants Simon to have more fun and experience things other than just being in the orphanage with nothing really being done. Sandra arranges for Simon to have a trip with his friends in the orphanage in order for him to have fun with them, but when Simon returns in the night, he feels very guilty in what he has done. The next day, Sandra is having another visit with Simon's father named Eduardo Bolivar (Alexis Llewellyn), who is also her ex-husband. Eduardo tells Sandra that if she allows Simon to live with him, he will be able to give Simon a much better life than living at the orphanage, as well as being rich and having a personal bodyguard who would never let anyone harm their child. Sandra wants Simon to live with her because she wants to be a mother to him, and not a caretaker who is putting him in another home. Sandra refuses this idea. She tells Eduardo that if he doesn't renew his promise to Simon, she will never let Simon live with him again. Eduardo agrees to her request and keeps his promise to Simon, but all the other children in the orphanage feel that Sandra betrayed them by sending them away from their caretaker, and they feel that Sandra isn't doing anything for anyone anymore.
